How to message on Twitter (website) ?

I am on Twitter have been for a while now but I can't seem to learn how to direct message people. I know how to do it: home, direct messages, but when I'm in the drop down menu to chose who I went to message there is only one person out of my one thousand something friends! Do you know why? Help needed and appreciated. ;]

A drop-down menu with thousands of entries wouldn't be very helpful.

The easiest way to direct-message someone is to go to their page and then use the 'message' link in the right-side bar. It's below 'Updates' and 'Favorites' and above the 'Following' montage.

You can also send a direct message by sending an update that begins with the letter 'd' followed by a space and the person's username, then another space followed by the text of your message.
